Section 6A

The Knights of West Central Area posted great dual meet numbers last season, 25-4, Park Region Conference champions, Section 6A champions and Class A 6th place honors. Back from team are; a state place winner, four state qualifiers, five section place winners and nine with experience. They did graduate four section place winners last spring, including two state qualifiers; of which one was a state placer. Despite the loss thru graduation, look for this team to continue to improve, they should challenge those dual meet marks from last season. Also look for them to make a strong challenge to defend their regular season honors and Section 6A honors. They could be one of the top teams in the state in class A, if they do avoid injuries and do continue to improve. Jake Nohre, Buzz Miller, Jake Larkin, Drake Swenson, Keaton Long, Sid Kamarath and Kaden Spindler to be their key leaders thru out the season.

Brendon Coyer, Colton Waldvogel, Darrin Stoetzel, Ronald Towle and Seth Johnson should be their key leaders thru out the year.

If they can get a few more into the practice room they should continue to improve during the course of the season. They leaders should include Kaven Blazek and Jason Staley.

MAT RATS CLASS 1A PREVIEW 2015-2016

MAT RATS CLASS 1A PREVIEW 2015-2016

FAVORITES: ZUMBROTA-MAZZEPA COUGARS and the DOVER-EYOTA EAGLES

The Cougars of Zumbrota-Mazzeppa should be a favorite in section 1A; they will return from last year’s campaign a 31-6 dual meet mark and class A runner up honors. Back from that team are three state qualifiers, three section place winners and four others with a great deal of experience. They did graduate seven seniors last spring, including six section place winners, of which three were state place winners. This is nearly half their team, but look for the Cougars to challenge those dual meet marks and make a strong run to defend their section and state honors. They will be a young team, but look for them to make steady improvement over the course of the season. Devin Manzy, Maverick Jackson and Hayden Stensland their returning state qualifiers; Spencer Defrang and Caden Steffen were both third in the section; look for these wrestlers to be their key leaders thru out the season.

The Eagles of Dover-Eyota posted very good dual meet marks of 16-6 and they were a final four team in section 1A. Back from that team are two state place winners, six section place winners and four others with a great deal of experience. They graduated just one senior, he was a state place winner. The Eagles should be looking to challenge those dual meet numbers from last season. They should present a major challenge to the favorite in this section dual meet campaign. Tanner Welsh and Ryan Keach are returning state place winners and Keaton Schaefer, Michael Otomo and Reid Seelhammer all earned third place in the section, they should be their key leaders thru out the season.

DARK HORSE: GOODHUE WILDCATS and the ST. CHARLES SAINTS

The Wildcats of Goodhue posted 15-10 dual meet marks last season, they have back from that team, two state qualifiers; five section place winners and seven with experience. They did graduate four last spring, including two section place winners. Despite that loss thru graduation; they should challenge those dual meet marks and for possible conference honors. They should be a top four team in what should be a good section dual meet campaign. Joel Gadient, a returning place winner and Bailee O’Reilly and five section place winners including Kelby O’Reilly and Mason Huemann should be their key leaders over the course of the season.

The Saints of St. Charles posted 6-8 dual meet marks last season, they have back two state qualifiers, two section place winners and eight others with a great deal of experience. They did graduate two last spring, they should be looking forward to a very good season, they improve their conference showing and should make a strong challenge for a top four spot in this dual meet campaign. Mark Buringa a state place winner and Alan Spaeth a state qualifier and section place winners Jacy Ball and Lane Heim should be their key leaders over the course of the season.

Look for the Tigers of Lake City the Gophers of Chatfield and the Warriors of Caledonia to make challenge for a top four spot in this dual meet campaign. The Tigers had four section placers and seven with experience back and the Gophers had a state place winner and a section placer and 5 others with experience back. The Warriors have back one state placer, one state qualifier, one back that was a state qualifier 2 years ago and another qualifier from two years ago. There are seven state tourney medal winners back from last season including: Tanner Welsh earned third place at 285 and Ryan Keach earned second place at 138 both of Dover-Eyota, Jake Mandt of Chatfield earned fifth place at 132, Kyle Cavanaugh earned second place from Caledonia, Joel Gadient of Goodhue earned sixth place at 126, Noah Bauer of Pine Island won a state championship at 113 and Mark Buringa of St. Charles earned fifth place at 106. There are a total of six state qualifiers returning form last year’s state tourney action; Devin Manzy, Maverick Jackson and Hayden Stensland of Zumbrota-Mazzeppa, Jackson Heydt of Hayfield, Bailee O’Reilly of Goodhue and Alan Spaeth of St. Charles.

Look for the following wrestlers: Jacob Bennett and Hayden Voxland of Zumbrota-Mazzeppa, Colin Jorde and Corbin Pourie of Dover-Eyota, Maleek Hussein, Tye VanSickle and Treye Vansickle of Chatfield, Mitchell Schmitz, Alex Goergen and Blake Mauss of Caledonia, Ryan Hanson and Jeremy Keller of Lake City, Trey Chatman and Cole Rasmussen of Hayfield, Kaleb O’Reilly, John Altendorf and Ryan Schoenfelder of Goodhue, Isaac Haman, Jack Williams and Trevor Turner of Pine Island, Randy Henderson, Ethan Otterbein and Adam Vacura of Triton, Kaleb Olson, Collin Schmoker and Tagen Miller of Wabash-Kellogg to challenge for medals at the end of the season.

MAT RATS CLASS 7A PREVIEW 2015-2016

MAT RATS CLASS 7A PREVIEW 2015-2016

FAVORITES: PIERZ PIONEERS and the AITKIN GOBBLERS

The Pioneers posted great 25-6 dual meet marks last season, along with the CMC and Section 7A championships. They have back two returning state place winners, four returning state qualifiers, five others with a great deal of experience. They did graduate four last spring, including one section place winners. Look for this young team to challenge those dual meet marks from last season. They should make a strong challenge to defend their conference and section honors. The Pioneers could challenge for some Class A state honors, if they stay healthy and they can spread their weights. Look for a big year from the Pioneers, they should be led by Kolten Eischens, Brandon Ortmann, Brett Kapsner, Reese Kapsner, Jake Andres, Andrew Tomala and Matt Kummet thru out the season.

The Gobblers of Aitkin posted 21-4 dual meet marks, they were Great River Conference champions and section 7A runner up last season. Back from that good season; one state place winner, two state qualifiers, four section place winners and seven with a great deal of experience. The did graduate six last spring, including four section place winners, of which two were state qualifiers. Despite that the loss thru graduation, look for the Gobblers to challenge those dual meet marks from last season. They should make a strong challenge to defend their conference honors and should be a top four team in this section dual meet campaign. Look for Noah Landrus, Jerod Novak, Kyle Lynn, Tyler Bare, Michael Roth and Silas Berg to be their key leaders thru out the season.

DARKHORSES: BLACKDUCK/CASS LAKE BENA BEARS

The Bears of Blackduck posted good dual meet marks of 15-10; they won hardware at two of the regular season tournaments and they were a final four team in section 7A. Back from that team are; one state qualifier, seven section place winners and six with experience. They did graduate six last spring, five were section place winners, of which four were state qualifiers and two were state place winners. Despite the loss thru graduation, the Bears should be looking at challenging those dual meet numbers from last season. Look for this young team to improve a great deal during the course of the season, they should make a challenge to defend those regular season honors. They should challenge for a final four spot in this dual meet section campaign. Mason Frenzel, Lucas Reiplinger, John Smid and Hunter Wilcowski should be their key leaders thru out the season.

Look for the Wolves of Walker/Hackensack/Akeley/Nevis and the Spartans of Nashwauk/Keewatin/Green to challenge for one of the top four spots in this section dual meet campaign. The Wolves have back two section place winners and twelve with experience. The Spartans have back three section place winners and thirteen with experience. There are three state tourney medal winners back form last season including: Noah Landrus earned fourth place at 145 from Aitkin; Kolton Eischens earned fifth place at 152 and Brandon Ortman earned sixth place at 120 from Pierz. There are a total of nine state qualifiers returning from last year’s state tourney action; Brett Kapsner, Andrew Tomala, Reees Kapsner and Jake Andres of Pierz, Jerod Novak and Kyle Lynn of Aitkin, Mason Frenzel of BCLB, Hunter Summer of Mille Lacs, Jace Geving of Deer River.

Look for the following wresters: Teddy Dehler, Jalen Jansen and Luke Girtz of Pierz; David Foster and Mason Preston of BCLB, Tyler Gunderson, Jared Rabbit and Brady Long of Deer River, Dillon McGee and Dakota Zimmer of WHAN, Justin Bruss of Nashwauk-Keewatin/Greenway, Cole Felde and Braden Ryan of Ogilvie to challenge for medals at the end of the season.

The Trojans of Barnesville posted good 13-5 dual meet marks, despite dealing with some injuries thru out the season. They earned Section 6A runner up honors, along with several regular season honors. They have back from that team; four state qualifiers, three section place winners and three with experience. They did graduate four very good wrestlers last spring, of which three were state qualifiers. Despite their big loss thru graduation, look for the Trojans to challenge those dual meet marks from last season. Look for them to make a strong challenge for section honors. This is still a young team; so the sky is the limit; just how much they could improve over the course of the season. Connor Meyer, Bradey Berg, Brady Tweeton, Kieran Johnson and Brady Martz should be their key leaders thru out the season.

DARKHORSES: BERTHA HEWITT/VERNDALE RAIDERS and the NEW YORK MILLS EAGLES

The Raiders of Bertha Hewitt/Verndale posted 6-13 dual meet marks last season, despite some major injuries to key wrestlers. The have back two state qualifiers, three section place winners and six with experience. They did graduate four section place winners last spring, including two state qualifiers, of which one was a runner up. Despite that big loss thru graduation, they should challenge those dual meet marks, if they stay healthy. Look for the Raiders to make a strong challenge for a top four spot in this very even (2-6) dual meet campaign. Ethan Kimber, Holt Truax, Zach Waln and Charlie Nienaber should be their key leaders thru out the season.

The Eagles of New York Mills posted solid 10-11 dual meet marks last season and they were a final four team in section 6A. Back from that team are one state qualifier, five section place winners and seven with a great deal of experience. They did graduate two very good seniors last spring, both were section place winners. Despite the loss thru graduation, look for the Eagles to improve on those dual meet marks and to have an exciting season. They should make a strong challenge for one of those top four spots in this even, (2-6) dual meet campaign. Sam Erckenbrack, Jake Erckenbrack, Matt Frost, Jett Saewert and Nick Hendrickx should be their key leaders thru out the season.

Look for the Cardinals of Staples-Motley and the Buccaneers of Border West to challenge for one of those top four spots in this section dual meet campaign. The Cards have two state qualifiers back, six section place winners and one with experience. The Buccaneers have back; one state qualifier, four section place winners and four with experience. There are two state tourney medal winners back from last season: Jake Nohre earned second at 106; from West Central Area; Alex Erpelding earned fifth place at 145; from Staples/Motley. There are a total of fifteen state qualifiers returning from last year’s state tourney action: Buzz Miller, Keaton Long, Blake Amundson and Kaden Spindler of West Central Area; Connor Meyer, Brady Tweeten, Kieran Johnson and Brady Martz of Barnesville; Eric Lisson of Staples/Motley; Sam Erkenbrack of New York Mills; Ethan Kimber and Holt Truax of Bertha Hewitt/Verndale; Justin Mattocks of Prairie Valley; Tracer Lee of Border West and Treyton Hought of Breckenridge.

Look for the following wrestlers: Levi Larkin and Tyler Onstad of West Central Area; Chase Brenner, Andrew Trowbride of Barnsville; Zach Frost, Mason Friedericks, Jesse Roberts and Johnny Flynn of New York MIlls; Ethan Orlando of Bertha Hewitt/Verndale; Blayne Dumprope, Blake Gerard and Kyle Gerard of Staples/Motley; Josh McKeown, Tom Leeseburg and Trevor Arceneau of Prairie Valley; Hobet Diaz, Alex Diaz and Dakota Pixley of Pelican Rapids; Carter Behrens and Eric Schwagel of Border West; Steve Erckenbrack, Chase Godel, Mason Snyder and Blaine Snyder of Wadena/Deer Creek; Tyler Vold and Travis Miranowski of Breckenridge to challenge for medals at the end of the season.

GRANITE RIDGE CONFERENCE

Favorites: Foley Falcons and the Mora Mustangs

Dark Horses: Becker Bulldogs and the Milaca Wolves

FOLEY FALCONS

Head Coach: Scott Gorecki

Enrollment: 484

Section: 6AA

The Falcons will be looking forward to a great season with eight section place winners returning, including two state qualifiers and four others with 10 wins or more. Yes they did graduate six seniors and three of those were state qualifiers, but this young team gained a ton of experience at the sections and state tournaments last season. Look for the Falcons to improve those dual meet marks and to make a strong bid to retain their conference and section honors and to possibly improve on their state honors. Look for continued improvement from this young team. Their leaders should be their returning state qualifiers; Spencer Elwell, Saylor Schmit along with section place winners; Austin Loehrer, Taylor Jurek. Also look for great seasons from Tryston Bemboom, Mitch Rothfork, Nathan Garceau, John Larson and Simon Bryce.

SAINT MICHAEL ALBERTVILLE KNIGHTS

Head Coach: Dan Lefebvre

Enrollment: 1,613

The Knights had a great season last year with their conference and section championships. But they will be looking for a state dual meet championship this season. Back from the team that posted a 26-3 dual meet mark are, eight state qualifiers of which five were state place winners. In addition they have a section place winner returning and an All Conference performer that didn’t compete in the section individual. In addition to that another wrestler that was a state qualifier 2 yrs. ago and was injured last season. The Knights did graduate six wrestlers last spring, including 4 of which were in the state qualifiers, of which two were state place winners. They return eleven wrestlers with twenty wins or more; they will be looking to improve on last year’s dual meet marks. Their leaders should include; returning state champions Mitchell McKee and Lucas Jeske; state runner ups Jake Allar and Evan Ronsen, fourth place returner Evan Foster, Patrick McGee, Donnie Leuer, Zach Nygaard, Zach Dehmer and finally the return of Seth Gardner. They have likely all could win over thirty matches each. It they stay free of many serious injuries they could be one of the top teams in the country.

WILLMAR CARDINALS

Co-Head Coach: Justin Brown/Ed Oehlers

Enrollment: 928

Section 8AAA

The Cardinals had their best season in school history; as they posted 28-2 dual meet marks along with a CLC championship and a section championship, they claimed fourth place in the state. They will be working really hard to improve or even match those numbers, however, they will be looking to defend some of their titles from last season. They will return five state qualifiers including four place winners, one section place winner and three others with a great deal of experience. They did graduate ten; seven of them were section place winners; of which five were state qualifiers. Look for the Cardinals to fill in some of their talented junior varsity wrestlers to for continued improvement thru out the season. I do believe there are a handful of teams that could win the CLC and those teams will be looking for a top four spot in what should be a very balanced section dual meet campaign. Look for Colton Carlson, Brady Reigstad, Clay Carlson, Israel Navarro, Logan Walkow and Cael Carlson to be their key leaders thru out the season.

  1. CLOUD TECH TIGERS

Head Coach: Bob Boeck

Enrollment: 1,181

Section 8AAA

The Tigers had a very good season last year; posting excellent dual meet marks and their CLC performance. Look for this young team to continue to improve and if their bigger guys get a little bigger and stronger they could be the team to beat in both the CLC and the section. They will have eight section place winners, including four state qualifiers, two of which were place winners and four others with a great deal of experience. They did graduate six wrestlers, including one state qualifier, so look for this young team to continue to make strides. If they stay healthy it could be the year of the Tigers. Their youth program has grown in numbers the past couple of seasons, look for some of those wrestlers, to start having an impact on the varsity. Look for Austin Brenner, Cole Schreder, Tyler Hugg, Luke Dorn and Alex Kern to be their leaders thru out the season.

ALEXANDRIA CARDINALS

Head Coach: Tom Ellison

Enrollment: 1,098

Section 8AAA

The Cardinals struggled with both injuries and just getting a couple of their wrestlers on the mat. They should be looking to improve on those dual meet numbers from last season. Back from last year’s team are six section place winners, including one state qualifier and eight others with a great deal of experience. They did graduate five very good seniors, including four section place winner, yet look for this team to come together and challenge those dual meet marks and to finish near the top in the CLC standings. Again this section dual meet campaign should be a good one, with a handful of schools being in the hunt. The Cards might be just a little short of that, but stay tuned, let’s see who is healthy at that time of the season. Look for Blake Olhausen, Ben Johnson, Ben Bogart and Adam Johnson to be their key leaders thru out the season.

SARTELL SABRES

Head Coach: Cody Olson

Enrollment: 1033

Section 8AAA

The Sabres struggled with injuries and with the lack of those big guys coming out for wrestling after the completion of football. Back from last year’s team are five section place winners, including two state qualifiers, of which one is a returning state champion in addition to that they will have nine others with a great deal of experience. if they get the big guys out and they stay healthy they should improve on those dual meet numbers. They could be knocking on the door to a top tier finish in the CLC if they fill out all fourteen weights. Same goes for competing for a top four spot in this very balanced section dual meet campaign. With the graduation of four last spring, including three section place winners, look for them to continue to improve and give anyone a challenge in this section. Look for Rylee Molitor, Noah Peichel, Nick Pelach, Tyler Hubert, Ben Strom and Caleb O’Brien to be their key leaders.

The Storm struggled last season, with injuries and they also had a young team. They do have several very talented wrestlers. They have back seven section place winners, including four state qualifiers and nine with a great deal of experience. They didn’t graduate anyone; so look for the Storm to make an improvement on those dual meet marks. If they do stay free of injuries, look for this team to in the rung of the CLC and to push for a top four spot in this very balanced section. Korey Keske, Tony Bemboom, Hunter Jakowksi, Zach Spohn, Taylor Rau, Kolton Farnick and Rich Carriveau should be their key leaders thru out the season.

  1. CLOUD APOLLO EAGLES

Co-Head Coach: Chad Emery and Mike Beehler

Enrollment: 1,079

Section 6AA

The Eagles should make a big improvement on those dual meet marks from last season. They have back five section place winners and four others with experience. They graduated just two last spring, so look for the Eagles to make steady improvement this season. It’s all about numbers, if they can fill in with some of their younger wrestlers they will be very competitive. With the wrestlers that they did send out to wrestle, they were very competitive. They have to fill their weights out; to win some of those duals. Look for great leadership from Peter Nelson, Alex Pachan, Ryan Sok and Tanner Blommer thru out the season.
